Fly fishing is an activity that can be mastered by nearly anyone but, as those of us who have been doing it a while sometimes forget, getting started can be daunting. The sport comes with it's own vocabulary, its own equipment and its own history. Our Fly Fishing School will not only help you learn to catch fish but also familiarize you with the equipment, vocabulary and other aspects of the sport. If you already fly fish this is a great opportunity to brush up on your skills and learn something new.
In addition to our regular classes we also offer seminars from time to time that will help you to learn more about fly fishing and improve your skills. Please check our schedule for any upcoming events.
If you're interested in attending our Fly Fishing School please give us a call or fill out our contact form to let us know. Please look through the options below to see which one best suits your needs.

Overview:
Our Introduction to Fly Fishing is designed for those who are completely new to fly fishing and have never cast a rod as well as those who are fairly new to the sport and want to make sure they receive a firm foundation. We will cover the fundamentals of the sport and progress to intermediate and more advanced techniques which will help you to catch fish in area waters and around the world. Classes are generally held in the Spring and early Summer although we do occasionally offer Fall sessions.
Our school is divided into an in-store introduction, a separate casting class and an on-the-water session, all of which are included in the price. The initial class is the only one that is scheduled at a particular time. Class 1 and 2 are scheduled individually so we can tailor the school specifically to what each student needs. The ideal time to complete the last two classes is January through May since the weather tends to be a little more consistent and water levels are generally good for the on-the-water class. Afternoon thunderstorm tend to cause problems in the summer. We do not offer any classes in November and December.
You will learn about:
- Equipment used in the sport
- Fly casting theory
- Where to fish
- Finding fish
- Hooking, playing and landing fish
- Recommended knots
Class 1 - The Basics
The initial class is held at Orlando Outfitters usually on a weekday evening. It is scheduled at regular intervals throughout the year. After this session is over you will have a firm grounding in the theory of fly fishing and be ready to try your hand at casting during the next session.
Class 2 - The Cast
The second class is generally held at a nearby park or at one of the baseball diamonds behind Orlando Outfitters and will be scheduled for a time that works well for both you and the instructor, preferably sometime during regular store hours. Our goal is to work with you to develop a good casting stroke from the ground up or, if you already fly fish, to significantly improve your cast. Class 2 generally lasts about 2 hours. Equipment will be provided if needed.
What to Bring:
- Sunglasses, sunblock and a hat
- A rod and reel setup in the 3wt to 9wt range if you have one. If not please let us know and we will have equipment for you to use.
Class 3 - On the Water
Our third class will take place at a local pond or stream. We will get you out on the water and help you to apply what you have learned. We will practice on-the-water skills such as finding fish and identifying good holding water, avoiding obstacles while casting, presenting the fly, and hopefully hooking, playing and landing fish.
We will do our best to tailor the experience and the type of water around the type of fishing you intend to do. Where we go will be determined in part by current weather conditions and the season. The Little Econ in Blanchard Park and the Econlockhatchee River in Oviedo are our favorite on-the-water classrooms. The Big Econ in Oviedo, in particular, is weather dependent and tends to be best iduring the first half of the year when the water is low and wading easy.
What to Bring:
- Sunglasses, sunblock and a hat. Because they protect your eyes from potential injury sunglasses are particularly important.
- Rod and reel with a leader. Your rod and reel should be set up before the class. If you need help getting your equipment ready to go please bring it to the shop a couple days before the class. If you would like to use our equipment please let us know when we schedule the class. We will supply flies but if you have some you would like to use please bring those as well.
- A valid freshwater freshwater fishing license (you can purchase one online) and picture ID unless you are exempt from the license requirements.
- Water and a Snack
- Camera, if desired
- Rain Jacket (if there is a possibility of rain)
- Quick dry nylon pants and shoes that can get wet/muddy and won't fall off. Expect to wade up to about knee deep, possibly a little more. If you would prefer not to get wet let us know when we set up the class and we'll plan accordingly.
Follow Up
If there is anything you need help with after completing our Fly Fishing School please stop by and ask. We are more than happy to answer questions or to go out back and work on any problems you may have with your cast.
If you are new to fishing you will probably find it best to start off in freshwater with some of the easier species such as panfish and bass, to build up your skills and confidence. There are some great freshwater lakes, ponds and streams in the Orlando area, the locations of which we would be happy to share with you.
