About the Guide:
You don't have to go to the Keys to find tarpon, snook, sea trout, redfish and a host of other powerful fighting fish, including the notorious Jack Cravelle. Captain Kent a life-long resident of Daytona Beach, fishes the waters of the Mosquito Lagoon North to Matanzas Inlet and is an expert at putting anglers in touch with some of the areas finned residents.

The most common species that we catch are Sea Trout, Snook, Redfish, Tarpon and Jack Cravelle. Captain Kent Gibbens has an uncanny talent for catching very large fish, including some of world record size. He knows their habits and can hook you up whether you are a novice or expert angler, new to boating or physically challenged, have children or have a group.

The fishing in this area is truly exceptional but part of what makes the fishing special is your surroundings. Our home waters are truly beautiful and full of wildlife. Dolphin and Manatee are sighted regularly as are the resident water birds. If you are fortunate enough to be fishing during the annual bird migrations you will have the opportunity to see some of the 300 species that travel through our area. You never know what you might see in the water below you, flying through the air or on a nearby beach.

In addition to his ability to locate the best fishing areas, Captain Kent holds a Master's Degree in Education. He is a frequent speaker at local clubs and has been a featured guide on the FOX TV Network with Lon McEachern's On The Pole. He is a certified ORVIS endorsed guide as well as a Fly Fishing instructor, teaching both novice and advanced fly fishing classes.

Half day, three-quarters day and full day trips are available. We fish with fly, artificial bait and light tackle, all of which are provided by Captain Kent. If you want to bring your own tackle please let me know ahead. A fishing license is not required. The Florida sun is intense, so do bring sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat.

Suggested Equipment:

Rods:

  • A 7 or 8 wt rod will work well for 90% of what we do.
  • You can go down to a 4 or 5 wt for bluegill back in the freshwater, though a heavier rod may be better since you never know what might eat.

Lines, Leaders, Tippet:

Flourocarbon bite tippets are recommended to keep from breaking off on the many sharp oyster beds in the area and also because you never know when a species with an abrasive mouth or sharp gill plates (tarpon or snook) might grab your fly.

  • Floating lines to match your rod weight.
  • 16 or 20# tippet for trout and redfish with a section of 30# flourocarbon bite tippet.
  • 16 or 20# tippet for snook with a 40# flourocarbon bite tippet
  • For Largemouth Bass I fish a floating line with 16 to 20# tippet with 30 to 40# bite tippet.

Flies:

Flies for Redfish, Snook, Trout and Bass:

All flies should have weedguards

  • Poppers and gurglers - 1 to 1/0
  • Borski's Bonefish Slider - chartreuse or natural
  • Rattle Mullet (redfish, trout, snook)
  • EP style baitfish patterns
  • Chartreuse Redfish Candy

Other Recommended Items:

  • Polarized sunglasses (preferably copper or amber tinted)
  • Hat with a wide brim
  • Lightweight rain suit
  • Warm jacket for early morning runs
  • Sun block
  • Food for lunch or a snack
  • Water or soft drinks
